The Nevada State Attorney General has designed this program for senior advocates, social workers, law enforcement, and legal and health care professionals currently practicing or interested in elder abuse prevention, detection, and protection. The conference will promote practices and tools to enable professionals to overcome barriers to preventing and remedying abuse against older persons in all its forms.
Conference Objectives:
At its conclusion, participants will be able to:
- Access legal tools to facilitate prosecution for elder abuse;
- List signs of Medicaid and Medicare fraud and how to report suspicious activity;
- List signs of financial exploitation of seniors and how to get seniors legal assistance;
- Discuss and implement better screening practices for elder abuse within the primary health care context and in long-term care settings;
- Discuss models for developing multidisciplinary teams to prevent and respond to elder abuse in the community;
- Describe the signs of elder abuse in multigenerational family settings and compare strategies to manage family conflict and prevent abusive behavior;
- Describe the potential factors leading to self-neglect and to use interventions for confronting and overcoming chronic self-neglecting behaviors; and,
- List and discuss tools for recognizing and treating dementia, depression, overmedication, and substance abuse.
Pending Keynote Speaker - Paul Greenwood, San Diego Deputy District Attorney
Paul Greenwood has led the San Diego District Attorney's Office of Elder Abuse Prosecution Unit for 11 years, and also serves as co-chair of the California District Attorneys Association Elder Abuse Committee. Mr. Greenwood has been involved in the prosecution of over 200 felony cases of elder and dependent adult abuse, both physical and financial. A nationally renowned champion of law enforcement's fight to protect our aging population, Mr. Greenwood has been featured on both CBS's "Eye on America" and on NBC's "Nightly News" to bring national attention to the ever-growing problem of elder abuse.
