Anyone in the world
By Donovan Baldwin Read anything about weight loss and you will see something about exercise. It might be referred to as \"physical activity\", but that\'s just a codeword. They mean exercise. Actually, many people have tried exercise and given up on it because it just didn\'t seem to work for one reason or another. Here are some explanations of why someone might think that exercise ISN\'T working, when it IS! THE BEGINNING OF THE EXERCISE PROGRAM FOR WEIGHT MANAGEMENT Exercise is activity, movement you might say. People have been moving all their lives, so they know how to do it, right? Well, if you are just talking about \"getting some exercise\", you might be right. However, if you are talking about exercise for the purpose of losing weight, things change a little. At the beginning of a weight loss program, the person has probably been sedentary for some time and has experienced an overall deterioration in the body\'s ability to deal with, or react favorably to, physical activity. At this point, almost any activity above the normal level becomes \"exercise\" for this individual. Over time, the body will adjust to the new level of activity and assume a new homeostasis, or overall balance of physical ability, fat, muscle, body weight, and metabolism. It then becomes time to adjust the activity upwards in order to arrive at a new balance. Once an acceptable balance, usually a target weight, has been arrived at, the individual can change from a weight loss program to a weight maintenance program. Unfortunately, people tend to be a little ignorant on the subject of exercise and sabotage themselves at the start of their weight loss program through several different mechanisms. Beginners usually: Try to do too much Don\'t do enough Don\'t increase the level Do the wrong exercises Have unrealistic expectations Don\'t understand what exercise is going to do Some of these items cross lines, so it is difficult to talk about one without talking about another one or two. For example, if someone has unrealistic expectations, they may try to do too much or too little. If they do not understand what exercise is going to do, they may choose the wrong exercises. Most of these problems are directly related to ignorance about exercise. This is why, if you are interested in using exercise as part of a weight loss program, you either do a little studying on the subject, or get yourself a good personal trainer. Let\'s briefly talk about the situations above. TOO MUCH EXERCISE This can cause you to fail in many ways. You can strain muscles, make yourself feel sick, or even injure yourself. After a day or two of too much exercise, your body and your brain will be screaming at you to \"knock it off!\" To be effective for weight loss, exercise should become a regular activity and if you are dreading the next workout, you will eventually find ways to avoid it altogether. You need to start small and build yourself up. This can create a problem also. TOO LITTLE EXERCISE As I mentioned above, for the sedentary individual, almost any activity will be classified as \"enough exercise\" at first. However, the body soon adapts to this small unit of activity and settles in at a new level, usually without really exhibiting much in the way of weight lost. INCREASE THE LEVEL OF EXERCISE Once the body has achieved its new level of \"fitness\" relative to the starting point, it becomes necessary to increase the intensity or duration of the exercise, or both. The person who starts out trying to run a marathon will fail. The person who starts out walking to the mailbox must eventually start walking past the mailbox and down the street, or they too will fail. THE WRONG EXERCISES Exercises can be divided roughly into three groups. In my high school days (don\'t ask how long ago) we would talk about strength, endurance, and flexibility. These days you hear things like resistance training, cardiovascular training...and flexibility. As pointed out, at the beginning, almost any movement will qualify for pretty near all three types. As you progress, you will have to separate out each and, for the purpose of overall health, give each its due. However, for weight loss, cardiovascular activities will probably give most people the most weight loss bang for their buck. Be aware that strength training will also benefit weight loss in the long run due to the formation of muscle tissue which can aid in burning calories. UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS Exercise works, but it generally works from the inside out. While someone who is overweight may experience an initial weight loss, most of what is happening is going to take time. If you want to look in the mirror in a couple of days or step on the scale and see obvious evidence of weight loss, you are bound to be disappointed. You will have to accept the fact that even the most perfectly designed and executed exercise program is probably going to take weeks or even months to produce inspiring results. At the start, you may just have to keep going on faith. However, EXERCISE DOES WORK! EXERCISE\'S LITTLE SURPRISE This actually happened to my wife. She was trying to lose weight and began exercising. A few days later, I could tell that she was experiencing benefits. She was more active, perkier, her complexion was glowing, she was walking around the house singing more than usual, and she looked \"tighter\" to me. One night we were talking, and she was going on and on in an excited way about how much looser her clothes were getting. In fact, they were getting so baggy; she was saying that she would have to go shopping for more. She was in a great mood when I left the room. A few seconds later, I heard her exclaim, \"Oh no!\" I stepped back into the room and she was crying. She had stepped on the scale and her weight had GONE UP since the last time she had weighed herself. Even though I had explained to her what was going to happen, like most people who have tried and tried to lose weight, her immediate reaction was that her exercise program \"wasn\'t working.\" She felt like another promise had failed her. We will leave aside the fact that everybody\'s weight fluctuates from day to day and from hour to hour. If you are checking your weight daily, you are setting yourself up for failure. If you MUST weigh yourself, do it once a month or even once every two months. If you have been eating properly during that time and doing your exercise, increasing it as you achieve each new level of ability, you will have lost at least a few pounds. What got her, and a lot of other people, is a simple physiological process which was, in a few days, going to work in her favor. When someone who has NOT been exercising begins to exercise, they usually build some lean muscle mass and burn off some fat. Unfortunately, at first, the weight of lean muscle mass that is added is sometimes greater than the amount of fat that is lost. Therefore, someone may find that they are actually GAINING WEIGHT for the first few days or even weeks of their exercise program. In time, if the program is continued, the muscle mass will plateau, and the fat will continue to be burned and the weight will come down. Remember how my wife was saying that her clothes were looser? That\'s because she was burning fat and adding lean muscle mass. The lean muscle takes up less space than the fat that has been burned. Even though she had gained weight, her body size was actually smaller...and she was healthier. If you are going to start a weight loss program, make sure you learn a little bit about exercise and use that in addition to monitoring your nutritional intake. By Doug Green How do you create flower garden ideas? Let me count the ways. Take garden tours. There is no substitute for actually seeing gardens in the flesh. I routinely take one or two tours every spring and summer just to see what I dont like. Read magazines. These dead-tree monthlies are full of pictures of great gardens. How else do you think they market their products ? smile I go to a bookstore and browse the racks. No, I dont subscribe to any because (quite frankly) I get most of my raw information from the Net. But I do get some interesting design ideas from magazines. Check out books. If you flip through pages of garden design books, (while youre in the bookstore) youre going to see tons of examples of great gardens. In fact, many of these gardens are unreal they are so perfect but youll get great ideas. Let me quickly tell you that pictures in magazines and books are often staged. I mean that the magazines hire professional photographers and crews to improve the look of the garden. Extra flowers are brought in and tucked in to make the garden appear fuller. A bit of garden whimsy is added here a potted plant is tucked there and suddenly.. what was a good garden becomes just a little more special in the eyes of the camera. For the next shot, flowers are moved, statuary adjusted and once again, the look of the garden changes. And you get a great looking garden magazine picture. The internet is a tough place to find pictures of great looking gardens. I tend to write about individual plants (the how-to of plants) but am moving towards design items (I wrote a paper book on Perennial Garden Design) and incorporating more real pictures in my website. One of the practical problems of course is that most of our garden photography is on slides and it takes a lot of work to transfer these to digital images. But this is about getting you good flower garden ideas not about the problems of garden writers. Sign up for my newsletter. Youll find I routinely talk about design or about parts of design in abstract terms. I cant solve your design problems but I do try to give ideas. Also sign up for my blog at http://doug-greens-gardening.blogspot.com/, youll find I talk more about garden design over there as I run into elements of light and space in my own gardens. By Michael Russell There are varying laws and jurisdictions regarding adoption. A closed adoption prevents contact between the biological parents and the adopted person. An open adoption allows varying degrees of contact however, they are not legally enforceable and may be closed at any time. If a child\'s parents are no longer able to adequately care for them or single motherhood is considered unacceptable, as is the case in some countries, then plans for adoption are made. Children are also abandoned near an orphanage in order to be adopted. Some parents involuntarily lose their rights because of child abuse or neglect due to alcohol or drug abuse. The child is then placed in foster care. If the parents cannot resolve the problems, their parental rights may be terminated by the court and the children may be adopted. Death of the parents accounts for only a small percentage of orphaned adoptions. For neglected of abused children, adoption can ensure an opportunity to bond with a new family. In the past, these children were kept in foster care while the birthparents resolved their issues with addiction, domestic violence, or mental illness. The Safe Families Act of 1997 is a law that prevents children from drifting from one foster home to another. When applying to adopt, the potential parents may be required to be interviewed and undergo financial, medical, and criminal record checks. This can be carried out by either the adoption agency or by an independent or state authority. Many parents look to adopt infants more often than toddlers or older children. They also seek children of the same race. So agencies, as a result, seek families who are interested in older children and those with special needs. The cost to adopt varies between countries. Adoption charges are illegal in some countries while in others, the adoption must be paid on a non-profit basis. Financial assistance is offered by many adoption programs. International adoptions include additional costs such as travel expenses and legal document translation fees. However, the increase in legalized abortions and single parenthood has reduced the number of available children for adoption in the Western nations. Many parents and adopted people have the desire to reunite. This has led to the opening of sealed records in countries where adoption is confidential. For example, in the US, organizations such as the Adoption Reunion Registry allows adopted children to access their sealed records. There are variations in the traditional adoption methods. In Arab cultures, an adopted child is considered a ward of the household. The child does not receive the adopting parent\'s family name. In Korea, adoption takes place when another family member gives a male child to the first-born male heir of the family. In Asian societies, traditional Western adoptions occurring outside the family are rare. However, in Africa, the regular exchange of children among families is common. This form of adoption is meant to create an enduring social structure among families and lineages. By Marc Goeke The issue of a fathers rights is a very important issue during child support and child custody cases. The way the court system is structured in the United States today, there is a generally clear bias favoring the maternal side in cases dealing with children and child support. Ideally, child support should always put the childs interests at the forefront. However, this isnt always the case, as many times children are simply put into their mothers custody despite her inability or unwillingness to care for them. A father has a right to contest any and all child custody and support cases; and it is generally in his best issues to do so. Typically, there are several areas of concern in regards to the rights of a father in child support cases that need to be addressed as soon as possible. First and foremost, fathers typically have to pay far more child support than what is truly necessary for the child. While it is a child and a responsibility, as long as the father can provide the basics for a child, the support obligation is technically met. Now what constitutes the basics? Well, every child needs to have adequate clothing, food, and shelter. A father should also be providing money for school, health care expenses, and various other necessities that are required for the child to maintain an adequate standard of living. What a father shouldnt be paying for, and often times is, is for living expenses of the mother. Often child support payments seem to be excessive and the extra income is spent by the mother on things other than the child or used as a basis for her to support herself and not work. This is unacceptable and is definitely a grounds for a father to challenge his child support payment amount and get a judgment to reduce his child support payment In addition to child support payments, child custody is also another issue that concerns a father and the rights he has to a child. Again, the court system will typically award custody to a mother almost by default. The father has to fight a biased legal system in order to gain access to his children even for joint custody or visits; let along trying to obtain full custody. There is also another issue regarding paternity. It is estimated that up 20% of fathers are paying support for children that arent their offspring. Learning about paternity issues and how to challenge paternity in court is a major step that allows a father to combat high child support payments. So what can be done to help establish and ensure the rights of fathers to their children? Well, a good lawyer and an thorough understanding of the laws involved on a national and state level is a good start. Free consultations with lawyers make perfect sense, followed by obtaining various information that could lead to reducing your child support payment or fighting for joint custody of your children. By Sandra Dinkins-Wilson There are roses for almost every type of gardening. So which do you use when you have some vertical space such as a wall or blank side of a house or even an ugly old fence just begging for the splash of color roses can provide? Why, you can use climbing roses and ramblers of course. Climbing roses can be used on some type of support structure or framework to provide color upward in a vertical fashion. They can even be used laterally like along a fence by training the canes out sideways. These support structures can be the usual pergolas, trellises, arches and pillars. But did you know you could also get some ramblers to climb up into trees? It\'s simply a matter of providing a good place for the canes to be tied to. To have a tree that ends up being draped with roses, you start with a hole about three to four feet away from your tree that you plant your climbing rose or rambler in (depends on the individual variety and how tall or long the canes will grow). Tip the rose in the hole with the roots away from the tree and the top towards the tree. Finish planting your rose properly. Now there are a couple ways to provide the structure for the roses to grow up into the tree. One, you can provide bamboo canes tied on each side of the tree going back down to the ground on each side of the rose (you can tie them in a travois type manner around the tree). Or provide wires or nylon rope tied up into the tree to a strong branch. As the climbing roses or ramblers grow, you tie the canes to the bamboo poles or to the wire. Once the rose is well into the tree, it should grow on its own well enough without further training. What a sight that would be - a tree blooming with roses the summer long. You can also do something similar with climbing roses growing up the side of your home. As said above, you simply need to provide the proper support structure for them to climb. Either use a trellis or use eyebolts with wire secured to them. Run the wires in a horizontal fashion across your home or you could try a fan-shaped version of wires for the climbing roses to grow on. As before, you will need to tie the canes to the wire or trellis. Should you decide to use the trellis, you just might want to consider a system for it that will enable you to lay it, and the climbing rose attached to it, down on the ground if you should need to do repair work or painting to your home. Some suggest putting hinges on your trellis to allow it to fold down. Another point with the climbing roses growing up the side of your home, is to try to keep it about two inches or better away from the actual side of the house. This allows air circulation behind the rose, which we know, helps fight the various rose diseases. Copyright 2006, Sandra Dinkins-Wilson Looking for more Rose Garden articles? By Anthony Lee In order for a person to lose weight, engaging in a weight loss program is not enough. He must also exercise regularly. Most of the time, dieters take a stroll around the park or jog for 30 minutes to an hour. Running burns fat. But some dieters try out another sport - swimming. Swimming as a way to lose weight is advisable for good swimmers. Good swimmers have already developed a rhythm in each stroke of their hands and therefore they burn fat in a graceful manner. Watch professional swimmers compete with one another and see how perfect their strokes are. Try it out first. If you glide through the water and not lose your breath, then you can go swimming instead of running. But if you are like a flounder fish making splashes and struggling to reach the other end of the pool, then stick to the ground\'s flat surface. If a dieter is already a swimmer then this would even increase the chances of him losing the extra weight faster and effectively. Because he already loves swimming, then doing it for 30 minutes to an hour wouldn\'t seem like a chore at all. Do not be impatient when it comes to losing weight. Try interval training. Interval training is when you extensively work out one day then do some light exercises the next. For example, you swam countless laps the day before. The following day, just do some light jogging. After doing a strenuous exercise, your body burns the fat. Hours after you stop your work-out, your body continues the process. By doing a less-extensive form of exercise, the next day, you are letting your body take a breather. The key to losing weight is to have the determination to do so. As long as you continue with this healthier lifestyle which includes swimming every other day, you will shed off those unwanted pounds in no time. By Richard Greenlane Following in the footsteps of many of its high street competitors, Alliance and Leicester has announced that it will no longer accept new customers onto its Online Saver and Direct ISA accounts. The interest rate for the Online Savers account is also being cut from 5.35% to a straight 5%. Richard Brown of the financial comparison website Moneynet believes that Alliance and Leicester (A&L), in common with its high street competitors, has seen its costs rise as a result of recent rule changes covering things like the way mortgages and general insurance are policed. He added, Unfortunately its the consumer who shoulders much of this additional burden It seems to many of their loyal customers that A&L is indeed determined to make their customers pay in an effort to purge costs and boost their profits. These cuts are only the latest of a series of changes that A&L have made during recent months. First to go was the cashback scheme on their Moneyback credit card. The Moneyfacts financial data website pointed out in February, that A&L had increased the APR on their credit cards for all purchases up to 16.9%; as well as increasing penalty fees, and introducing punitive new clauses to current accounts. Other charges have been introduced to their mortgage products, balance transfer fees on credit cards, reductions in childrens savings accounts, whilst The Guardian has revealed some suspect changes that have been implemented to their systems to increase the number of customers who breach their overdraft agreements, triggering penalty charges. A&L has said that there is no hidden agenda, and that it still leads the way compared with its banking rivals. A&L however, are not the only financial group to be feeling the pinch. Barclays, HBOS and Royal Bank of Scotland have all warned about credit arrears. An announcement concerning job losses at Scottish Widows, came alongside admissions from their owners LLOYDS TSB that there was, An increase in the number of customers experiencing repayment difficulties with their credit card debts and unsecured personal loans. According to Lloyds\' Chief Executive, Eric Daniels, we are currently experiencing, \"a slowing consumer environment\". Recent announcements by the Treasury delivered the worst monthly public borrowing figures since records began in 1993, re-igniting fears over a possible rise in taxes. Consumers are reducing the amount they borrow on credit cards and analysts predict mortgage lending in the UK will plummet by 10 per cent over the next three years, as the out of control growth in house prices finally stalls. Independent market analyst Datamonitor claims, lenders who have been enjoying a boom in recent years, will struggle to maintain the momentum and be forced to work harder to secure market share. Investor Connections, a group of independent financial advisers, has called for an accurate assessment of the UK\'s current economic position, after statistics showed the three main asset classes, shares, bonds and property are all experiencing downward trends. This downturn should spell good news for borrowers and homeowners, as the mortgage and credit industries fight for customers and sharpen up on their competitiveness; however the evidence of Lloyds TSBs actions seems to belie this. With HBOS forced to criticise the other credit card companies for failing to provide customers with adequate product information, despite repeated requests to do so from consumer lobby groups and watchdogs on the Treasury Select Committee, it looks like the majority of finance companies are currently out to protect themselves and their share-holders, with little regard for their customers. At a time when UK consumers are proportionately saving less than half of what they were 25 years ago, you might be forgiven for thinking that competition in the banking world would be becoming increasingly cut-throat in order to gain customers business, but it seems that the big institutions are instead looking to go down the route of cost reduction to protect their profits. There are savings are out there to be made, but they are savings in costs to be made by the finance companies, at the expense of the consumer, rather than beneficial savings for the customer. Richard works in Edinburgh for a media company, occasionally writing for the personal finance blog Cashzilla, and drinking too much coffee. By Stephanie Gottschalk Hosting any kind of event is exciting and rewarding, but can sometimes also be stressful if youre not organized. If youd like to entertain your friends and family with a party to remember, a picnic party is a great way to have fun and enjoy your guests rather than spending the whole time worrying. Use these helpful and easy guidelines to create your own party success story. Choose a Theme Your theme can be as simple or elaborate as youd like just about anything goes. Garden parties are lovely during spring, summer and fall. Some other ideas include Hawaiian Luau, beach, holiday, exotic Far East, pirate, hoe-down or even interactive murder mystery. Put it in Writing Send out invitations two to four weeks before the party. Frugal hosts can easily print their own on their home computer, or purchase a pack of simple invites from a discount store. Be sure to include the date, time and location of the party as well as your contact number so guests can RSVP. Remember to mention that its a casual picnic party so guests wont turn up in their Sunday best. If youve chosen a particular theme and would like your guests to dress up, put this in the invitation as well. Keep it Simple - No need to spend exorbitant amounts of money on your supplies and dcor. Youd be surprised at how a few simple things can make a big impact. Colorful disposable tableware and paper tablecloths instantly dress up a backyard picnic table or patio set; inexpensive fabric draped from the walls or around the porch roof creates an intimate ambiance. Use What You Have Walk around your house and look for decorative objects that fit your theme. Candle holders, table lamps, posters, throw pillows and similar items can simply be moved outdoors and used as dcor. Make a Seating Chart If youre planning on having a structured, seated dinner, a seating chart can be a great way to introduce various friends and family members who have interests in common. Purchase some nice printed place cards from a craft store, or make your own from card stock and put them at each table setting. Mix it Up Have different activities going on to keep everyone entertained. You can either divide the party up into the cocktail hour, dinner, dessert and dancing afterward, or serve a casual meal while having various activity areas around your yard or garden. For example, you could have a dancing area on the deck, board games on the patio table, and horseshoe or croquet on the lawn. Use the Web The internet is an extremely valuable tool for planning any event. Communicate with guests, receive RSVPs via e-mail, research recipes or find that perfect party item youve been looking for. Dont limit your party to what you can find at the store down the street you literally have an entire world of choices at your fingertips! Keep it Casual Even if you choose to serve a nice seated multiple-course meal, make it lighthearted and fun to keep your own stress level down. Serve everything family-style, cut down on dishes with disposable plates and utensils, and ask a few friends to help make sure nothing goes awry. Cheat Selectively Nobody said that hosts have to make everything themselves to have a fun, memorable party. Youll save yourself a lot of trouble (and time!) by letting other people do some of the work. For example, you could have your party catered by a nearby restaurant, or make the main course and order up some sides from a deli. Splurge on Food and Flowers These are the top two things that everyone will notice, and theyll really set the mood for the whole affair. Fresh flowers instantly brighten any room, creating a comfortable atmosphere and drawing attention away from areas that arent in top shape. As for the food well, youre throwing a picnic party, and the food is the main event! You definitely want it to be delicious. Relax Dont run around the whole time wringing your hands, wiping up crumbs and working in overdrive trying to achieve perfection. Your party will seem perfect to your guests not because every little thing is in its place, but because they had a great time and you should, too. Stephanie Gottschalk writes the blogs \'Picnic Fun - Tips and Recipes\' and \'The Joy of Water Fountains\' for Specialty Living Inc., an Asheville, North Carolina-based company that aims to share their love of people, nature and life through high quality water fountains, picnic baskets and outdoor living products. By Rick Valens Is your love relationship smooth? Have the both of you actually quarreled before? If your answer is yes, then you should be happy and be glad that it happened. But if your answer is however a no, then you should be aware of the danger that you are facing. Hmm did I make things sound a bit too scary? Ha, it is not exactly that serious; dont be scared off by me. Well, I should believe that the both of you are just, still in the sweet honeymoon period of your relationship. In life, we encountered a lot of up and downs. But it is nevertheless, through all these problems and obstacles that we learn to stand up on our feet times and times again despite the falls we had, that made us what we are today. If life were to be so smooth for us, we wouldnt have grown and learn to truly appreciate it. The same goes for love; if a relationship is ever so sweet and smooth, we wouldnt have learn to really appreciate and cherish the love that is between ourselves and our love. It is through the overcoming of all those quarrels and problems, surviving them through together that we truly know that we deeply cherish the love that is between both, strengthening the relationship more than ever. Be glad that there is quarrel between both. It actually means that the both have developed another step further in your relationship. It is only when one is closer to you that a quarrel will then actually happen. I dont suppose you will pick up a quarrel with your partner whom you just started dating? You be just trying all out to please him or her instead, wouldnt you? But do however treat each and every quarrel seriously, especially when the both of you have just started. This is the time for you and your partner to further understand each other more deeply, the time for you to reflect on yourself and honestly think about the relationship. This is the time for the relationship to be tested. A test of your love for one another; whether this relationship is strong enough to withstand any thunderstorm there may be. Well, a survival never fails to further strengthen the relationship, truly cherishing each other ever more. Avoid unnecessary reasoning at the point of a quarrel. Most of the times it will only make things worse, wait till both have cooled down. At the end of the day, always make an effort to find out what actually went wrong. Is it your fault? Talk to each other nicely, share your unhappiness; let your partner know how you felt. A softer tone is always more calming and pleasing to the ears. Your partner will usually be willing to listen and to share his or her feelings with you too. Sometimes it is out of too much care for one another that unwillingly trigger off a quarrel between both? Remember, nobody wanted any quarrel. If you are at fault, please dont be a stubborn donkey, you jolly well apologize and seek for your partners forgiveness. A word of sorry isnt really that hard to say out? There is nothing ashamed to feel of, especially when with your love? Admit your fault, a sincere apology would always be pleasing to the ears; most of the time, harmony it will bring. Nonetheless, if your partner were to apologize to you, you graciously accept it. Why start another quarrel when you could end it? Well, there shouldnt be any overnight grudges between couples. Give each other a good hug. I love you dear, I am really so sorry to have hurt you, please forgive me Now isnt that such a sweet ending? It is usually through so that you understand each other better, cherishing each other even dearly. Remember, love is a two-way communication. It takes two happy persons, a happy you and your love to complete the equation. Anyone in the world
By Sharon Teitelbaum Through my own two major career changes, and after coaching many people through successful career change, I have determined six useful strategies for navigating this life passage with skill, perspective, humor, a sense of adventure, and a great outcome. First of all, know up front that few people feel skilled at figuring out a new career or finding that next job. Most people find the task daunting. If you are someone who is used to feeling on top of your game, be willing to be out of your comfort zone on this one chances are, this is not your game. And if you are usually a not-too-confident person, know that in this context, you are not alone in feeling unsure of yourself. These strategies can help. 1. Know this: ITS NOT A LINEAR PROCESS! 2. Network, Network, Network! 3. Be Generous With Self-Acknowledgement and Self-Care 4. Choose Expansive vs. Limiting Beliefs 5. Build and Use Support Systems 6. Stay on the Plus Side Lets look at each of these in more detail. 1. Know this: ITS NOT A LINEAR PROCESS! You will experience less frustration and waste less time if you accept this and dont try to use your left-brain to figure out the whole thing in advance. Allow for surprises, serendipitous connections, and intuitive hits. Be very clear on your intention, stay in action, and listen to the feedback. By listen to the feedback, I mean observe your results. Notice whats working and what isnt. Keep doing whats working. Stop doing whats not working and get some help with it try to figure out WHY its not working, and fix it if its fixable. Stay in action! Did you ever play the board game Clue? Remember the secret passage from the Kitchen to the Ballroom? In a career process, you never know when or where you will find a secret passage! 2. Network, Network, Network! Let everyone know what you are up to, and let them know how they can help you. I mean everyone. Not just your closest friends and your siblings, everyone! That means the people you run into, your neighbors, your hairdresser, your colleagues, your doctor, dentist, accountant, attorney, the folks who service your car, and so forth. Have you ever been able to be helpful to someone who wanted to make a connection of some sort? Have you, for example, ever been able to give someone the name of a great housepainter (electrician, accountant, chiropractor) when they asked? Its an easy and delightful thing to do for another person. Let the people in your life have that opportunity with you. Let them know how they can help you. Is there a company or an industry you wish you knew somebody in so you could talk to them? Ask around. During my own career exploration that eventually led me to coaching, there was a point at which I wanted to deliver some corporate training on issues pertaining to personal and organizational change. Although I knocked directly on corporate doors, my breakthrough opportunity came from a student in one of the music classes I was teaching at the time. She asked me to do training for her staffs on Managing Change. She knew of my interest because I had told the class what I was up to. Of course, if your exploration needs to be confidential, you will need to be more discrete in the way that you do it. Do your networking quietly, but do your networking. 3. Be Generous With Self-Acknowledgement and Self-Care Two kinds of self-acknowledgement are required during a career change. First, you must regularly acknowledge yourself for the hard work you are doing. There is a 4-part cycle that your work is part of: 1. Set a goal, 2. Do the work, 3. Meet the goal, and 4. Acknowledge and celebrate. The fourth part is equivalent to a paycheck and a boss saying to you, Good job. I appreciate the work youre doing! Your self-acknowledgement can be simple and sweet. The second kind of self-acknowledgement involves your getting very clear on as many of your skills and gifts as you can and taking full ownership of them. You really need to be in full command of what it is you have to offer out there in the marketplace. Many people have a hard time owning and claiming their expertise, but its really essential that you know who you are and what you have to offer not inflated, not deflated, but accurate. In addition, extreme self-care is called for, above and beyond the usual level. Career change is hard work, which can be very depleting. You need to keep yourself nourished do more of the things that fuel you. And you need to be sure that there are no places where energy is leaking you need all your energy for this work. 4. Choose Expansive vs. Limiting Beliefs We love to be right. We love to see our beliefs proven true. Those of us who think that people are basically good tend to see the world through that filter. Take a good hard look at the beliefs that are your filter, particularly where they pertain to work, money and opportunity. Do you believe that people like you (your gender, age, level of experience) dont have a chance in the job market? If so, then you will not have a chance because you will not see the opportunities out there for you. Does part of you believe that having money is not a good thing? If so, then you will manifest that ambivalence by not attracting more of it than you already have. 5. Build and Use Support Systems Do not do this alone. Hire a coach, join or form a group, find a success buddy, create a structured arrangement with a friend. Here are the important elements you want in your support structure: you want people who believe in you and in your quest; you want something structured, so that there is a routine to the support. In a structured arrangement with a friend for example, you could set it up so each of you gets a 5-minute check-in to report on what you have accomplished since the last time you spoke. And you need to end by getting clear on what your next steps are for today and until the next time you meet. 6. Stay on the Plus Side If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. Then start climbing out. There will be some days you feel inspired, excited, and pumped. There may be other days you feel discouraged, tired, and disenchanted. You need to develop a strong witness to these ups and downs, that is, develop a part of you that is able to stand outside the feelings and simply observe. When you can observe your feelings as well as experience them, you have power and options. When youre up, use the time constructively this is a great time to take risks, to talk with people, to be bold. When you are feeling low, it is critical that you recognize it for what it is a feeling and use your skills to get yourself into a more constructive and energetic space. Start developing an inventory of activities and strategies that get you out of these low places. Everyones inventory will be a little different. Some people are uplifted by spending time in nature; other people get lifted out of discouragement by sharing with friends whats going on for them and letting the friends help them. And even when youre feeling low, you can stay in action. It may not be the time to make phone calls, but it can be a great time to do research on the internet, or pick up your suits at the cleaners. In summary, career transition or job change is a challenging life event. Take very good care of yourself during this process do not take yourself for granted. Let others contribute to your quest in a variety of ways. And enjoy the adventure! COPYRIGHT 2000, Sharon Teitelbaum. All rights reserved.
