By James Kilkelly I have been known to rant on about how people should try to include more native plants within their garden. However, I would never dissuade someone from including a Japanese maple within his or her garden; on the contrary, I would heartily recommend it. History and colour The image of a Japanese maple in full leaf brings to my mind images of oriental calmness, still water and moss covered mountains. This elegant plant is a distinct part of the culture and consciousness of its native Japan through its use in both horticulture and art. In the year 1800, over 200 varieties of this plant were noted in Japan, this figure grew over the next 100 years, only to have those numbers knocked back again to 200 by the maelstrom of the second world war. Japanese maples also known as Acer palmatum or Acer japonicum are diminutive in stature compared to other trees. Heights range from 1 metre to 7 metres, leading many gardeners to class them as large shrubs rather than small trees. Words cannot do justice to the colour displayed by a Japanese maple; it must be seen to be believed. An Acer owner will experience fiery new spring growth, calm summer foliage and even fierier autumn chilled leaves. Palmate or Dissectum There are two main groups of Japanese maple. The Palmate group has a reasonably upright growth habit with layered branches and leaves that are made up of five to nine lobes. The Dissectum group rightly lives up to its name with its lobed leaves dissected, feathered and lace-like. I feel that the maples in the Dissectum group look particularly well if planted close by an informal water feature due mainly to their weeping, cascading form. How to grow a dwarf acer Japanese maples do well if planted in an east facing aspect, allowing it access to the morning sun and protecting it from the mid-day sun. Shelter from winds and a moist but free draining soil are also important cultivation requirements. A 7cm layer of bark mulch applied to the plants base will help prevent the plant drying out. To enable good growth you must feed your little piece of the orient, apply a liquid fertiliser in mid-spring and again in mid-summer at half strength. As these Acers are shallow rooted, they are ideal for planting amongst other shrubs with no check to growth. For a delightful oriental scene, try planting Acer palmatum with rhododendrons, azalea, bamboo and birch. Specimens for container growing Two beautiful specimen maples whose leaves are opening out within garden centres now are Orange Dream and Beni-Maiko. Orange Dream is worth mentioning due to its fresh yellow/green lobed leaves. The young growing tips have an orange glow, providing an attractive contrast. Beni-Maiko on the other hand produces lovely pink foliage in spring turning to dark red in summer. Both of these Acers grow to around 1 metre tall, an ideal size for container growing. If you choose to grow a Japanese maple in a container, try to select one that is sympathetic to the plants heritage, a glazed oriental style pot would be ideal. By Blake Williams Non Medical Home care in the United States is one of the fastest growing small businesses. Home Care services are delivered to approximately 7.6 million individuals with projected annual expenditures of $48.3 billion in 2007. If you own a Non Medical Home Care business or if you are considering starting one, you must know what your potential clients needs are. Home care is a broad term that describes a wide variety of health related services provided in the home setting. Home care is health care brought to your home to maintain or restore your health and well-being. What Your Clients Want For Non-Medical Home Care clients, the motivations are all about taking care of someone that they care about. What drives those motivations is comfort level with you. Your potential client wants to FEEL like you care. It is easy to write about the services that you offer. It is much harder to dig down deep and use your words to turn marketing collateral material into a meaningful message that your company is the company that they want to trust to take care of someone that they love. Dont just explain your services, talk about them and why you offer them. Before any client does business with you as a Non-Medical Home Care professional, they want to know that this is more than just a profession for you, and that they will be more than just a replaceable business opportunity. By contracting with you, they are offering to let you into their home to take care of them or someone that they care about. Keeping It Real As with any message, you can go overboard with the message of care. Trying to make the case that the parent is as well off with you as they are with their family probably isn\'t going to win you any new friends... or clients! Family caregivers want to be supported, not replaced. This is not to say however, that you can abandon professionalism in working with your clients. You can be the most wonderfully personal and nice person that they have talked to, but if they sense that you lack professional courtesy and responsibility, it is all for nothing. If they wanted to just hire a really nice person, there is probably an unemployed cousin somewhere in the family who would gladly sit around and collect a paycheck. Professionalism is an absolute must. Blake Williams is the founder of SmallBizGuides.com and a multifaceted business management expert, speaker, and author. By Doug Green Those wonderful green lawns many homeowners care about so much can be made much more healthy if we put them on a diet. Overfeeding causes as many problems with lawns as it does with people. Fat lawns are not healthy lawns. Rather than go on about this problem, let me simply tell you about the research at the University of Guelph. Researcher Christopher Hallfound there was a way to promote health in the lawn by the frequency of the fertilizer application and the amount of fertilizer applied. According the Hall, fertilizer for lawns should be applied three times per year. One quarter of the fertilizer being applied should be applied in early summer, (not early spring) when the ground warms up and the grass is beginning to really grow. Another quarter is applied in late summer, around the middle of August when the fall rains are promoting growth, and the last half of the fertilizer is applied at the end of November to fatten up the roots for winter survival. This application rate was found to create a much denser turf than applications at other times all species and cultivars of grass. It was particularly effective on perennial rye grass and tall fescues. The next question is how much food does the lawn need? Chris Hall at Guelph found that the turf did better if only 2 pounds of Nitrogen per 1000 square feet was used over the whole season. From the above paragraph, it can be seen that 1/4 pound is applied in early summer, 1/4 pound in late summer and 1 full pound in late November for the healthiest, thickest lawn. Overfeeding produces thatch and weakened grass that is susceptible to pests and disease. It is also more costly. So, put your lawn on a diet for a better lawn. By Matthew Scott Here\'s a constipation remedy you can easily make at home and store for ongoing use. The ingredients can be bought in health food stores and Chinese or Asian supermarkets. This remedy for constipation is also highly nutritious and can be taken after illness and in cases of poor nutrition and anemia. Constipation Remedy - Pumpkin and Sesame Seed Paste Ingredients Raw pumpkin seeds (60 grams), raw black sesame seeds (60 grams), raw peanut kernels (30 grams), sugar to taste. Double the amounts to make a larger batch. Method 1. Heat the pumpkin seeds in a pan till they become fragrant. Remove the seeds from the outer shells as they open up from the heat. Put the heated seeds in a bowl. 2. Repeat step one with the sesame seeds, then the peanuts. 3. Place the pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and peanuts in a mortar and pestle and grind them up. Add enough water to form a thick paste and mix in sugar to taste. Or, use a blender. 4. Let the paste cool, then store in a sealed jar in the fridge. Dose Take one tablespoon of paste before breakfast and again before bed. Consume with a small glass of warm-hot (NOT cold) water if you wish. Continue daily till your bowels return to normal. Benefits Pumpkin seeds benefit the intestines and prostate and can also eliminate internal parasites. Black sesame seeds lubricate the intestines and nourish blood. Peanuts also have lubricating and nourishing qualities. Overall, this constipation remedy lubricates the intestines so it\'s especially useful in cases of hard, dry stools. It may also be taken as a tonic when you\'re not eating well, as a snack or when you\'re in a rush and have no time to eat. Note: You may also have to adjust your diet to get the most out of this constipation remedy, i.e. cut out junk foods, which do little more than clog up your colon, and eat more fresh fruits like apples, papaya and bananas and more vegetables such as carrot, cabbage and leafy greens like spinach. By Donna Monday Here\'s a quick way to compare your own job experience and qualifications with those that your prospective employer is looking for in a specific job position. Make an Interview Preparation List. When you prepare for a job interview, it\'s good to have a quick reference of your past work experience that you can study ahead of time to help prepare you for the specific job you\'re interviewing for. Grab a sheet of paper and make three columns. Column A will be \"Position Requirements\"; Column B will be \"Your Qualifications and Experience\"; and Column C will list \"Your Stories\". For this exercise, you\'ll be using the actual job description from the employer. So, in Column A (Position Requirements) you\'ll take one piece of the job description and write for example: \"Ability to work well with others.\" Ok. Now you\'ll have to think about your own experiences while working well with others. What specific examples do you have that demonstrates this ability? Great. You\'ve thought of something. In this example, we\'ll write under Column B (Your Qualifications and Experience) \"Worked on the XYZ project team.\" Now you need to break it down even further and list a specific action-oriented example of \"working well with others\" on the XYZ project team. In Column C (Your Stories) you write something like this: \"Coordinated winning marketing campaign which resulted in a successful launch of new product.\" Wow. See how successful that makes you look? Keep going until you\'ve listed something for every part of the job description. Use your list when preparing for a job interview or even to prepare your resume. By Mike Lindsey Problems with sinuses, give rise to headaches, so you have to know the symptoms of a sinus headache in order to know if you actually have one. The sinuses are small spaces in the facial bones just below the facial skin. The spaces are concentrated in the nasal region, temples and around the eyes. Sometimes, due to infection, these spaces get inflamed with mucus and infected as well. Below are some of the symptoms of a sinus headache: A gentle shake of your head can tell you if you do have a infection of the sinuses(sinusitis). If you move your head even slightly, the pain will increase and this is a good method of deciding whether the headache is actually due to an infection of your sinuses, this is one of the major symptoms of a sinus headache, and if you find you do have an infection, do not shake your head as this will give rise to even more shooting pain headaches. Another method is to try bending over. The moment you lower your head you will feel as if there is something heavy inside your head. If doing so leads you to discover you have a infection of the sinuses, refrain from bending over until the infection clears. There are many causes for sinusitis which are allergy, a deviated nasal septum, and severe cold, enlarged parts inside of the nose, and acute ongoing infection, and sometimes menstral. By Michael Russell Love is supposed to be pure, yet it always seems to be around when money is exchanged. In the early days, the groom was required to give gifts to the bride\'s parents as part of the marriage agreement. Since the parents of the bride were losing her to another family, they needed to be compensated. During these times, the engagement ring was not only given as a symbol of the groom\'s intentions, but also as partial payment for his future wife. The engagement ring has gone through many changes. Some of the earliest rings were nothing more than plants wrapped around the woman\'s finger. Of course, these had to be replaced each year. Some rings were made of iron, to symbolize the permanent nature of marriage. Early Roman rings were simple bands with a carved key. Some thought the key symbolized a woman unlocking her man\'s heart; while others believed the key was a sign of ownership, because after marriage, the woman would get half her husband\'s wealth. The ring finger appears to have more mystery than the ring itself. The fourth finger on the left hand, has long been regarded as the ring finger. Legend has it that a vein of love connected the fourth finger to the heart, but of course this wasn\'t true. In fact, some cultures believed it was the third finger that had the vein of love. Before the 1500s, Christian tradition required rings to be worn on the third finger of the right hand. In some European countries, the ring is worn on the left hand before marriage and is moved to the right hand during the ceremony. Since grooms aren\'t paying the family of the brides any more, what is the purpose of the engagement ring? The bride will get a wedding ring, so are two rings really necessary. When you consider the costs involved with a wedding, reception and honeymoon, an engagement ring appears to be an extravagance born out of tradition and not common sense. The lack of money causes a lot of problems in a marriage and is usually a major factor, if the marriage ends. So maybe the money for the engagement ring should be placed in the bank, to help with future expenses. And giving an engagement ring doesn\'t always lead to marriage. People change their minds all the time about who they love and how much they love them. If there is no wedding, what happens to the engagement ring. The ring was a gift, but it was given with the presumption of marriage. If there is no marriage then maybe the ring should be returned. It shouldn\'t matter why the relationship ended, or who ended it. No one should financially benefit from a broken engagement. Whether the engagement ring serves a purpose doesn\'t matter, it almost seems mandatory that you give one, if you expect to be married. It\'s funny how relationships start out, being about love and commitment, but in the end, they always seem to come back to money. By Sharon Koenig So your relationship has changed over the years since you said I do and sex isnt what it use to be. First you should know that this is normal and common place in the majority of marriages. Knowing that you are not alone does not make you feel any better nor does it get you the satisfying sex life that you once had. You simply cant go through the trials of life without changing. Some men and women feel that if their spouse is not interested in sex, this gives them license to have an affair. Being in a committed marital relationship puts the responsibility on you to improve your marital sex. Though bringing the passion back into your marriage is not a one-way street. At the end of the day, you can only change yourself. Take a look at your lifestyle first; this will help you determine what needs to change. If your are both so tired from dealing with children, work, money and household chores then no wonder your time between the sheets is a wee bit dull. So you find that you are both working 24 hours a day seven days a week, now you realize that it is time for a break and enjoy each other just like you once did when life was a little more carefree. One of THE BIGGEST mistakes a couple can make is to not pay for child care, pay for a maid or take little mini vacations, in a nutshell, taking time for each other without all of the stresses of running a home and family. Yes, I can hear you saying that this is costly. Let me put it to you this way, would you rather pay for a maid every now and then to give your wife a break or a Marriage Councilor or worst a Divorce Attorney. I know, not every sexually dissatisfied relationship ends in divorce however a dissatisfied sex life is statistically one of the biggest reasons that people get divorced. So here is a little tip for you to improve marital sex. Locate a Parents Night out service to care for the children and take your time with each other to do the things that you fell in love with in the first place. Other things that you can do, is to take a little more pride in how you look. Studies show that men respond to visual stimulation so ladies, take head and spruce your self up from time to time. Lets face it, the sweatpants are great for doing chores around the house but when your husband comes home from work, freshen up for him and maybe even make your man melt when he lays eyes on you. Men are not off the hook here either, that extra tire around the waist may need to go. If youve been carrying around too much extra weight since your dating days, maybe its time to get a Health Club membership. These behaviors happen to all of us, its easy to fall into a rut; thats ok but if you want more passion, then act like youre dating each other all over again. I cant guarantee that you will get some tonight but you are no doubt on the right track. Lets not forget about communication. This is touchy though if you have a spouse who is uncomfortable talking about sex. If you choose to put this effort forth, you must bring up this subject in a calm; relaxing environment. Talking about this during a marital argument is a definite no-no. Bringing blame or being defensive wont solve the problem either. Above all be patient with each other, try new things, have a sense of humor and remember to make time for a date night which of course includes time for a spicy, passionate sex life. Often sex is plentiful just simply boring. It is a challenge for most married couples to add newness. Trying new love making positions or even experimenting with adult sex toys could bring you right out of the rut you are both in. By Les Herron Paul was able to articulate the power of the resurrection and the gospel of the good news with such passion and clarity precisely because he was highly educated in the old ways. If I remember correctly the Gospel of Matthew was written in such a way as to appeal to the intellect and the education of the Jewish people who would know that heritage was important. In an opposite fashion, the Gospel of Mark was written in a more simple format to reach those who were not concerned about genealogy. It is written for action, paints a moving picture, and moves along a chronological timeline. They are all works of intellect and did not magically appear on really, really thin pieces of paper in thee Old English tongue. Daniel was a man who walked with a great anointing from God. He interpreted dreams, stood faithful in a captive situation, and rose to high levels within the government. Is it possible that in his anointing he had to lose his mind? It is more likely that his mind had to be completely engaged in the service and worship of God as he found favor in all things. Joseph was able to completely transform the current and future lives of his entire tribe because he engaged his mind in what God was doing. Had he been lead by his emotions he would have gone crazy with what life threw at him. Instead, he took each thought captive and wrestled it into the reality of who he knew God to be. Because of his intellectual ability his family went from starvation and drought to some of the best land in Egypt. Jesus Himself continuously engaged peoples intellect using scripture, parables, pictures, and debate tactics to both draw them in relationally and to breakthrough to their spirits. It has been said that our intellect gets in the way of God moving. However, is it not true that our emotions get in the way of God moving? Both are the fleshy part of us (our soulish nature) and both must be submitted and conformed to Gods will. Yet, rarely do we hear revivalists asking us to suspend our emotions. On the contrary, our emotions are engaged at an almost rock concert level with blaring music, rock star status for the special speakers, dimmed lights, and our favorite tunes. Why are we not warned in the midst of these meetings of the emotions that run rampant and lead us into soulish endeavors? Why are we not told to turn off our emotions so that God can speak to our heart? In a world where the culture is far more prone to emotionalism than intellectualism it appears that revival services may be playing into the dominant spirit of our culture: emotionalism. Similarly, we have made fun of the Baptist style of revival that contains solid preaching for a 3-5 day period and appeal to the intellect yet it appears that we may have swung to the other side in providing an emotional free-for-all without even attempting to engage the mind. In the same way our Baptist brothers would say Ah, that is all emotional and dismiss what the Spirit is doing in that realm we have said Ah, that is all intellectual and have dismissed what the Spirit is doing in the balance of things. Watchman Nee wrote a brilliant book called The Latent Power of the Soul. In it the basic premise is that we must crack open our intellect and our emotions so that our spirit man can be released. From this I gathered that both were at enmity with our spirit and warred against what Gods Spirit within us would have us do. Watchman Nee realized the power the soul had and how it was able to keep the spirit in improper submission and encaged in a fleshly prison. Only when our minds and our emotions line up with Gods heart will we be able to live a consistently Godly and love-producing life. Must we lose our minds when it comes to revival? I doubt it. In fact, it appears that we must engage our minds even further in the study of the written word and in intimacy with the Living Word. The next wave of revivals will be a result of the emotions and the intellect being cracked open and submitted to the heart and mind of God, thus allowing the Spirit that dwells within us to move freely through us.
