Anyone in the world By David Gomm When building French style windows, we need to cut many diamond shaped pieces and it would be tedious to draw around a pattern piece for each one. So we came up with a system for cutting them quickly. When we cut vecchio glass the challenge is even greater because of the roughness of the glass. If you follow these steps when attempting to cut glass into diamonds, you will find your speed of cutting out the window will be much faster and you\'ll be able to cut the rough glass sucessfully. As you can see in this photo, the glass has a lot of texture. It has a rough side, which I turn down for the cutting, but the smooth side has seeds and bubbles in it, so it\'s tough to get a clean cut. Take one diamond pattern piece and lay it out on the sheet of glass so you can get the glass oriented. you\'ll want all the pieces to run with the texture going up and down the height of the diamond, so turn the entire sheet of glass so that the straight line you\'ll be cutting lines up with the pattern piece. In this photo, I\'ve already cut a few strips and I\'m cutting one which runs the length of the sheet of glass. I dip the cutter in oil and run the wheel up and down the glass lightly to spread some of the oil on the surface that I\'m going to score. You\'ll have to hold the glass from slipping with your left hand as you score with the glass cutter using your right hand. Exert more pressure than you do when cutting smooth glass and try to plow through the spots where the cutter hits a seedy spot and wants to stop. Then, grab the glass with both hands and rock them apart to break the entire strip free from the sheet of glass. Then, slide the sheet against the strip cutter guide edge on the table to set up for the next strip. Once again, I\'m able to use my hands to rock the two pieces apart. Many times I use running pliers when breaking strips of glass, but these are wide and the glass is uncooperative. This edge cut off leaving a piece that sticks out and I have to score and break off a bit of the corner before I can line the edge of the glass up against the strip cutter guide. When you\'re done, you will have a whole stack of strips. Take the strips, one at a time and cut out diamonds. Take the pattern piece you started out with and line up the glass strip so that you are cutting the glass at the proper angle and then draw a line on the workbench using a sharpie marker so you can line up future strips with ease. After scoring the diamond, use the edge of the strip guide as a raised straight edge to snap the glass off. And lay out the finished diamonds on your French design window pattern. You will find that often the edges will be smooth enough that they won\'t require grinding, but make sure to grind those that have imperfections so that they won\'t be weak and subject to heat cracking. Anyone in the world By Alvah Parker In the 80s while I was an account executive for AT&T most people in my organization worked normal (for then) business hours. By that I mean they arrived close to 8 or 8:30AM and left between 5 and 5:30PM. By 6 PM the office was empty. No one seemed to notice or care how many hours people worked. I had a boss nicknamed Dry Cleaner Sam because they joked he was in by 10, out by 4. Most of the time I left on time with everyone else. Several times however when I had a big sale pending I would stay late to get the contract in order or to put the final touches on a big proposal or presentation. On those occasions I would get teased by my colleagues. They thought I was nuts for not waiting until morning to finish the work. How times have changed! I noticed the change beginning in the early 90s. Now what I had been doing voluntarily became expected. Everyone was staying latesometimes to 9 and 10 at night, even later. 40 hour weeks became 50, 60 or 70 hour weeks. Long hours became a badge of honor for some. Today 50, 60, or 70 hour weeks is the rule not the exception. Employees are penalized in their appraisals, pay and promotions if they dont keep up those hours. Not only does this happen in large corporations, those in the professions especially lawyers feel the affects of this change. What happens to children when both Mom and Dad have to work 60 hour weeks? I actually know attorneys who have two nannies, one for days and one for evenings! Im sure it is no surprise to workers that research is already showing that those who put in 50 hours a week have higher rates of hypertension which is a precursor to heart disease. Nancy Cleeland of the LA Times says, Studies in Europe, Japan and the US have linked increases in cardiovascular risks and disease to a global push for greater productivity. I recall one manager in my office noticing that all of the managers had gained weight in the year that we had been in that branch. When I looked around I saw he was right. . We werent taking time for regular meals and the vending machine we used was filled with candy bars and high calorie snacks. It is no wonder that obesity is also a huge problem in the US today. What once felt like a badge of honor because only a few were doing it, now feels like a requirement for everyone. No one dares make suggestions about lightening the load or leaving early to spend time with the family. Lawyers on the partner track know that is not an option if they are to bill the required number of hours. Others realize that long time unemployed workers would willingly work those hours just to have a job. What can you do? The first step is to consciously put your health first. That means getting enough sleep, eating properly and getting some exercise. You will have little value to your firm if you are ill and not able to work. Second begin to think of yourself as a free agent. This means that you take the responsibility for keeping your skills up to date. You also take courses, write articles and become known in your industry as an expert. You establish a good relationship with your network of contacts, people who understand your value and will help you if you need it. A free agent knows he/she can find work anywhere and can create good business for the firm or for him or herself if necessary. The less you are dependent on that job in your company or firm the more options you will see. For many this solution will seem risky. The risk of doing nothing is even greater. Businesses today are totally bottom line focused and there is little loyalty to workers unless they have something unique that the business needs. If you have strong relationships and the skills, you are valuable to your current employer, to other employers and to yourself. You hold the keys to your own future. Take action: 1.Take stock of you health. Find a way to have healthy meals, get enough sleep each night and exercise at least 3 hours a week. 2. Make a learning plan. Where do you need to upgrade your skills? What skills do you know so well you could teach them to others? What expertise do you want to develop? 3.Who is in your network? Who are the 20 people you could contact if you needed a new job? What clients would follow you? When did you last have contact with them? Make an appointment with someone you havent seen in a while. Plan to meet with the others in the next month. 4.What makes you stand out in your work? Find something you want to be known for and start letting people know. You can be the Go to person for _______. 5.Hire a coach to help you. A coach can hold you accountable for creating and implementing your plan. We count the number of calories we eat, we count the number of fat grams we eat, we count the carbohydrates we eat, and so on. My favorite method is changing my diet from high-calorie to low-calorie foods, but eating twice as much of it. Somehow, my approach rarely seems to work. You\'ll of course discover that not all diets work the same for everybody. Some diets will work better for you and some will work better for me. The Atkins diet - this requires a drastic cut in carbohydrates, which is definitely not an option for me. I just love pasta way too much. The South Beach Diet - this is a popular diet to lose weight because it allows dieters to eat many of the foods they eat anyway and is not quite as restrictive as others. Even though all these programs are pretty good, they all require exercise, which I\'m just not ready to commit to at this point. But if you\'re willing to exercise, these may be for you. Anyone in the world By Lois Galloway It amazes me that 6-10 million Americans have been diagnosed with this isolating disorder. Whats amazing about this is that not much is written about BPD much less talked about. Almost like there is a stigma attached to the very name. The name Borderline Personality Disorder originated in 1938 by Adolph Stern. He was describing a group of patients that didnt quite fit an existing diagnosis; patients that were classified as past the neurotic stage but not quite psychotic. However these days this disorder is seen in a different way but the name BPD has stuck. BPD is relatively common, affecting 10-14% of the general population. Women commonly suffer from depression more often than men and the frequency of BPD in women is two to three times greater than men. Nearly 20% of psychiatric hospitalizations stem from BPD. While people that suffer with depression or bipolar disorder typically endure the same mood for several weeks at a time, a person with BPD can experience depression and anxiety that may last only an hour or at most, a day. Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder Impulsive aggression Self injury Strong feelings of anxiety Feelings of low self worth Drug or alcohol abuse Impulsive behaviors Feelings of being misunderstood Experience unstable relationships Sometimes people suffering from BPD view themselves essentially as bad people or unworthy. This mood instability and poor self-image can bring on bouts of anger, eating disorders, panic attacks and anxiety. Very intense emotional turmoil appears to be a way of life for those afflicted by it. However, often times a person with BPD can present as a bright, intelligent individual with a warm, friendly nature. They can maintain this appearance for a number of years until their defense mechanism breaks down, usually because of a very stressful situation like a relationship breakup or death of a loved one. They may feel isolated and empty which may result in frantic efforts to avoid being alone. People with BPD often formulate highly unstable relationship patterns. While their relationships with family and friends can be very intense their attitude can change dramatically and suddenly from great admiration and love to profound anger and distaste. Often times they will form an immediate attachment to another person but when even a slight conflict or separation occurs they shift suddenly to the other extreme and accuse the other person of not really caring about them at all. They are highly sensitive to any sign (real or imagined) of rejection and react quickly with anger and distress when their expectations are not met. Over the years treatments for BPD have improved with group and individual psychotherapy at least partially effective for a great number of patients. Talking about present challenges and past experiences with an empathetic and accepting therapist on a consistent and regular basis has proven effective. Patients are encouraged to talk about their feelings rather than expel them in their usual self-defeating manner. Sometimes medications such as antidepressants or lithium carbonate are helpful in treatment of BPD and brief hospitalization may be necessary during acutely stressful episodes or if self-destructive behavior threatens to erupt. The goals of ongoing therapy and/or treatments would be to increase an individuals tolerance of anxiety as well as increase self awareness and build more stability into relationships. With increased self awareness and introspection, it is hoped that individuals with BPD will be able to change rigid patterns of behavior set earlier in life which in turn will help prevent these patterns from repeating themselves in future generations.
