What is AHEC of Southern Nevada?
Area Health Education Center(AHEC)of Southern Nevada is an outreach arm of the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Incorporated in 1989, Southern Nevada AHEC is part of the national AHEC program, which operates in forty-three states.

The Nevada AHEC system, established in 1986, has become the state’s primary source of health care education, support, and information in the underserved urban, rural, and frontier communities of Nevada. The Nevada AHEC system consists of three offices: the High Sierra AHEC in Reno, the Northeastern AHEC in Elko, and AHEC of Southern Nevada located in Las Vegas. AHEC of Southern Nevada is the largest of the three programs in the Nevada AHEC system.

What is AHEC of Southern Nevada's service area?
AHEC of Southern Nevada serves Nevada’s four southern counties: Clark, Esmeralda, Lincoln, and Nye. This diverse service area includes the most densely populated part of the state (Clark County contains 70 percent of the state’s population) as well some of the state’s most sparsely populated rural and frontier areas.

In addition, AHEC of Southern Nevada provides statewide programs and training, including the biennial First Lady’s Conference on Women’s Health Issues, the Sexual Health Conference on teen risk behaviors, Weapons of Mass Destruction training, and training for the Strategic National Stockpile Rollout plan. As home for the state chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America, AHEC of Southern Nevada serves as a central point of coordination for child abuse prevention efforts and organizations throughout Nevada.

Are my donations tax-deductible?
AHEC of Southern Nevada is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, and all donations to the agency are tax deductible. While many donors make in-kind or monetary contributions to the agency as a whole, others prefer to direct their gifts to specific programs, such as child abuse prevention, health career awareness and training, or breast or cervical cancer screenings. How is AHEC organized?
AHEC is governed by a 20-member Board of Trustees. This group of community and business leaders, educators, students, and health care professionals volunteer their time and expertise to ensure that AHEC accomplishes its mission. Board members represent all geographical areas in the AHEC service area. One member serves as a liaison for the Prevent Child Abuse Nevada chapter.

Executive Director Rose Yuhos oversees the day-to-day operations of the organization. AHEC’s work is divided broadly among two programatic departments: Professional Education, and Youth and Family Development. Each department is managed by an Associate Director who reports to the Executive Director. Staff members from the programs within each department work collaboratively to address the diverse needs of the communities we serve.

How is AHEC funded?
Primary funding for AHEC is provided by grants from national, state, and local governments as well as private foundations and community donors. AHEC develops partnerships with other community agencies and leverages resources to ensure that every dollar is directed effectively toward meeting the agency’s mission. AHEC has a history of sound fiscal policies backed up by annual outside audits and accreditation from United Way of Southern Nevada.

How does AHEC set its priorities?
To insure that all AHEC programs are relevant, meet the needs of the constituent populations, and are addressing programmatic and educational gaps, the agency conducts regular formal and informal needs assessments, identifying the needs of health professionals, agencies, women, and underserved populations. This type of assessment allows AHEC staff to look for educational trends that otherwise might not become apparent and provide opportunities for learning, keeping AHEC flexible and responsive on an ongoing basis.
